Course overview
This one-day regulated qualification is designed for anyone with responsibility for fire safety in the workplace, including Fire Marshals, Fire Wardens, supervisors, managers and other nominated staff.
Learners develop an understanding of workplace fire hazards, how fires start and spread, fire prevention and control measures, fire risk assessment, means of escape, fire-fighting equipment and the responsibilities of Fire Marshals and Fire Wardens.
The course provides a recognised Level 2 qualification for those who have, or are preparing to take on, workplace fire safety responsibilities.

- Fire hazards and risks
- The fire triangle and how fires develop
- How fire and smoke can spread
- The principles of workplace fire risk assessment
- How to reduce the likelihood of fire
- Fire detection systems and methods of raising the alarm
- Means of escape and evacuation arrangements
- Different types of fire-fighting equipment and their uses
- Employer and employee responsibilities for fire safety
- The day-to-day responsibilities of a Fire Marshal/Fire Warden
- The role of a Fire Marshal/Fire Warden during an emergency
Assessment and certification
Learners complete a 20-question multiple-choice examination at the end of the course.
The assessment lasts 45 minutes, and learners must correctly answer at least 12 out of 20 questions to achieve a pass.
Successful learners receive the Highfield Level 2 Award in the Principles of Fire Safety (RQF).
E-certification is included in the course price.
Course duration and timings
This is a one-day face-to-face course with a minimum of 6 guided learning hours. The qualification has a total qualification time of 7 hours.
A typical training day can run approximately 9:00am–4:00pm, including appropriate breaks and the end-of-course assessment.
Timings can be adjusted to suit the organisation provided the qualification’s required learning and assessment requirements are met

Practical Fire Extinguisher Training
Practical fire extinguisher training can be incorporated into the course where required.
Where a practical extinguisher demonstration is requested, the organisation booking the training is responsible for arranging suitable extinguishers with its fire equipment provider and for any associated supply or disposal costs.
