Food Safety in Catering – SCQF Level 5

Course Overview

The Food Safety in Catering at SCQF Level 5 is a nationally regulated qualification designed for anyone involved in preparing, handling, storing or serving food.

Delivered over one day with a minimum of 6 contact hours, the course gives learners the knowledge and understanding needed to maintain good food safety and hygiene practices and help protect consumers.

The course covers key areas including:

  • Food safety legislation and responsibilities
  • Foodborne illness and food poisoning
  • Personal hygiene and handwashing
  • Cleaning and maintaining hygienic premises
  • Pest control
  • Food spoilage
  • Cross-contamination
  • Chemical, physical and allergenic contamination
  • Safe food handling and preparation
  • Temperature control and HACCP
  • Storage, labelling, traceability and stock rotation
  • First aid considerations including food poisoning and anaphylaxis

Learners complete a written assessment at the end of the course. Successful learners achieve the Award in Food Safety in Catering at SCQF Level 5, awarded by First Aid Awards (FAA). The qualification does not expire, although ongoing CPD and annual refresher training are strongly recommended.

Assessment & Certification

Learners complete a written assessment at the end of the classroom course. There is no grading; learners either pass or are referred.

Successful learners receive the Award in Food Safety in Catering at SCQF Level 5, a nationally regulated qualification awarded by First Aid Awards (FAA).

The qualification does not expire, although FAA strongly recommends annual refresher training and ongoing CPD to keep knowledge current.
